About 80% of our customers contact us with rat problems. Once you know a little about rat anatomy, it’s not hard to understand why. Roof rats are about 7-10 in. long and can weigh around 4-9 oz. Their long, slender bodies enable them to wriggle through a variety of holes. So unless your home is thoroughly sealed, chances are that a rat can get in.

Roof rats like to nest in high areas of homes. While they often enter attics through flaws in the roof, they can also gain access to homes through open or poorly sealed garages.

Rats love buildings, since they offer shelter from the cold temperatures of winter and a secure location for having their young. Unlike some other species, rats mate all year round, with February, March, May and June being their primary mating seasons. Rats can give birth to many young, with some litters including seven pups. Since females can start breeding when they are just three months old, once rats are in your home, they may never leave!

Rats can carry diseases like hantavirus and rabies, while they also carry dangerous pests such as fleas and ticks. Rats can communicate diseases to humans through bites or scratches, but ingesting food or water contaminated by a rat can also lead to serious disease. You can even get sick inhaling dust from where they have been living or just by coming into direct contact with an infected rat.

In addition to the threat rats pose to your health, their tireless chewing can damage electrical wires, often leading to power outages or fires. They can also chew through wood paneling and other building features.

If rats are in your home, you may hear squeaking or scratching behind walls or ceilings. Sometimes you can also hear them scampering across the attic.

If you’ve already spent considerable money dealing with a rat infestation, only to see them return, chances are that your home is not properly sealed. Without proper sealing, animals who are already accustomed to your property will readily come back.

Some people feel that setting traps is a sufficient response to a rat infestation. Unfortunately, rats are highly intelligent and can easily find ways to get food out of traps without being trapped. If you discover a rat on your property, contact an animal control specialist. At AAAC Wildlife Removal, our professionals have the training and modern equipment necessary to successfully trap rats and manage the damage they have caused.

Rats like to die in strange places, and dead rats can even be found inside walls. If a dead rat is not promptly dealt with, the body can cause further damage to your building while attracting other pests. If you encounter a dead rat on your property, contact a wildlife professional who can remove the body and then clean and deodorize the area.

If you need assistance with rat control or removal, we are just a call away! The professionals at AAAC Wildlife Removal are your rat control specialists.
