Raccoons may look cute and cuddly, but the mask they wear perfectly matches their characteristics and personality. Raccoons are cunning in nature, and they can run off with your food and even end up lodging in your home.

Native to North and South America, racoons can also be found in Germany. Raccoons have distinctive black masks over their eyes and rings on their tails. They typically weigh from 10-20 lb., with some of the largest reaching 30 lb. From nose to tail, they are usually 2.5 ft. long. In the wild, raccoons generally live up to 15 years.

In your home, raccoons can be found in the crawlspace, chimney and attic, where they can do extensive damage. Raccoon urine and feces can contaminate insulation and surrounding surfaces. Their droppings are particularly dangerous, since they can contain raccoon roundworm, a deadly disease. Raccoons can also carry and transmit diseases like rabies and distemper.

Out in your property, they like to search through trash and steal pet food. They also like to dig through flower beds, often destroying treasured flowers.

Since raccoons are nocturnal eaters, they are rarely seen during daylight hours. At night, however, you may hear noises on your roof, in your chimney on in your attic. An already bad situation can be compounded if intruding raccoons start reproducing, which can be any time from early spring to late summer. Mother raccoons are very protective around their kits and can turn aggressive when they perceive a threat.

Raccoons can also get themselves trapped in dumpsters or other locations on your property, bringing an unwanted nuisance to your doorstep.

Getting Rid of Unwanted Raccoons:

Here are a few suggestions for getting rid of unwanted raccoons:

  • Feed all your pets inside your home and eliminate food from your yard and garage, including from trash cans without a lid.
  • Remove an open water supply, as racoons are attracted to water.
  • Seal off any potential access points to your home or any potential shelter such as chimneys and garages.

Raccoons can die in strange places. If a dead raccoon is not promptly dealt with, the body can cause further damage to your building while attracting other pests.
